His jet launched the rocket on the deck, he was strapped in and had to eject.
The official word was electronic malfunction. I've never heard the theory of a wet start as the cause. It was widely known that McCain was a legacy, I believe he really didn't want to go in the Navy and finished pretty low in his class at Annapolis.
A Navy cover-up wouldn't surprise me one bit.
