When I was a kid playing sports, we always either sold stuff for fund raising or we did work. One summer my team all cut grass every Saturday for 6 weeks. I think we asked for $15 per yard (was in the 70's).

This begging for donations doesn't work for me.

The worst are the ones that come from the bad side of town to sit out front of grocery stores in the good side of town.

So there has been some recent studies on this and most of the results show that people tend to give more to fundraising when there is no product or service in return.
