The caliper itself does next to nothing other than house the piston(s) that push the pads, and provide a place for the pads to sit against the rotor.
If the car stops, but makes noise when you hit the brakes, overwhelming odds are you need to replace the pads.

The noise goes away when I apply the brakes.

Do all pads make noise when they need to be replaced or just certain vehicles?
I got over 100k on a set of pads and still haven't had to replace them. I remember on older cars having to change them much more often.
