This is true and sucks. I busted their balls about this very thing. I am no longer under contract, but have a box that went bad. They won't replace it unless I sign another 2 year contract or purchase a box out right. If it is still their equipment and it fails, they should replace it if I am paying a monthly rental fee. We are currently debating this issue right now. I'll get my box with no contract.

EDIT- Talked to the right US loyalty department and they are overnighting me a new HD box. No contract renewal issue with a direct replacement. Just equipment upgrade. They need to educate the foreigners. They have no clue what the frick they're doing. Not only DirecTV, but all overseas call centers. I think Google's is the worst.
