Yes, do some research. Don't listen to the haters. Jamaica is awesome. I've been there 10 times and always had a great time.
I've stayed in Treasure Beach 6 times. Great people and yes, a super chill atmosphere. Jake's is a bit out of my price range but I've eaten there and did their Farm to Table dinner this year which was really cool.

I've never been I've just read the stories, so can you enlighten us? I'm honestly curious. How is it better than all the other islands?
I would not feel unsafe if it was just me, but I doubt I'd take my wife there. No way I'd take kids there. That's not because of Jamaica, its because of all the other options you have that have 0 to worry about and probably more to offer. I just don't see anything that puts it over the top compared to every other island and possibility you have?
Its like going to Mexico City or Egypt or the Middle East right now. Chances are you'll have a great time and it will be awesome, but why not do something else now with less risk and visit Jamaica down the road when its better?
