Grant would have and did do things like that. He allowed the Confederates to go home after Appomattox, allowed Lee to keep his sword, and allowed the Confederate soldiers and officers who had horses to keep their horses for the harvest.
Hell...after Vicksburg he paroled all 30,000 prisoners.

Thanks. Didn't know that and what I do know is from family papers and lore told to me by my older relatives, many years ago.
Not much was said about Grant, but plenty about Sherman (great man) and Pemberton (coward)

My great, great, grandfather was paroled, but he went on to join up with a Louisiana Infantry group, and saw action in the Red River Campaign.
I forgot what infantry group it was, I'd have to look in my papers, which I don't have access to right now.
