Obviously under college rules it was a dumb decision and it sucks tgsf he will likely regret it for the rest of his life. Just don't think the umps need to call that in that moment. At the end of close games especially championships, umps and refs and officials always let things play out more loosely.

By this logic just tackle the receiver on the last second hail mary because hey the ref shouldn't make that call at that point in the game

Maybe watch the play again.
A. There is no way he thought he could beat it. He was out basically around the time he started his slide.
B. He didn't even touch the bag.
