The only thing I would consider using one for is bent over rows or shrugs, but I have barbells and DBs for that, so I don't use it at all.

I Worked out at a gym for a year that didn't have a free weight bench and only had Smith machine. I recently switched to a gym with real benches and it's taken me about 2 weeks to get used to it. I also can't lift quite as much yet.
