As I posted on the other thread, technology can reduce airborne separation. The bottlenecks in the system are at the major airports. Final approach is already about as tight as it can be run and still have the lead aircraft clear the runway. The only solution to this problem is to add runways at major airports. Like rush hour in a big city, everyone wants to be at the same place at the same time. There is only so much capacity. Look at the New York area for an extremely complex ATC puzzle. Multiple major airports in very close proximity.
