calling takes a hell of a lot of practice...I have been hunting for decades and I still have to take my calls out a week or so before the season to get tuned up. best thing to do is put them in your vehicle and blow them all the way to work/school each day.

as you say, you have to grunt into the call to make it sound right. I find that the hardest part is crisply starting and stopping each individual quack...you have to use your tongue really forcefully for it to be crisp.

also, most of the "quack" sound comes from varying how much your hand is opened on the downstream side. start with your fist almost closed and open it through the quack...basically gotta do the same thing with you hand as you do with your lips when you say the word "quack".

honestly, if you can get around someone who can call, they can show you all of this in a half hour or so.
