That's largely Apple's business model. They take products in niche markets which they simplify and/or improve the industrial design and make the market mainstream. Regarding the HomePod, integration and developer support is going to be the key. I can't control my Fire TV with my Echo Dot which I think is ridiculous. If HomePod Siri can control Apple TV and Apple TV apps, it may not be enough to make me switch, but if I was just entering this space it'd be a pretty compelling reason to sway me Apple's way.

I don't think Apple is making much off of it now, but if this catches on at all they'd be crazy to not make iMessage cross platform. The potential gain is bigger than the iPhone lock in.

That's how it's going to be for awhile. AR is probably the next big thing but you really need something like glasses for that to work but people don't want to wear glasses. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple turned the Apple Watch into a legit medical device before AR gets cracked.
