So basically, the catcher stood in a spot directly in the path of the runner from third to the plate. The catcher never moved her feet from where she was standing while waiting for the throw, caught the ball and dropped directly down in Quinn's path to the plate. It's interference, and that's why it was an automatic call for the umpire.

It's actually not interference. It's obstruction. The offense interferes, the defense obstructs. Let's get that clear.

Second, you're ignoring the part of the rule that says her progress has to be impeded due to the catcher not having the ball or being in the process of catching the ball, while blocking the base. The only way her progress was impeded is that if the umpire determined that the catcher being there caused Quinn to slow or alter her path to the plate BEFORE she caught or was in the process of catching the ball. Once the catcher has the ball, or is in the act of catching the ball, she can block any damn base she wants.

I'm not saying she didn't slow down or check up while running down third base line because the catcher was in the way. I just didn't see it. And by RULE, that had to happen for there to be OBS.

And let's not forget the last sentence that you didn't bold.

quote:

Blocking access to the base with no noticeable effect on a runner remains a “no call.”

Did you see Connie slow down or anything prior to the catcher having the ball or prior to the catcher being in the process of receiving the ball?

In my mind, I'm already there.

Can someone explain the difference in the 2 calls? LSU tagged the runner out at home. Both plays looked the same to me. Glad LSU got the call. Just curious as to the difference. TIA.

I agree with you, although the NCAA play-by-play termed it interference.

quote:

LSU 5th - Quinn singled through the left side (3-2 BSKBB). Springfield out at first p to 2b, SAC, bunt (0-0); Quinn advanced to second. Serrett singled, advanced to second on the throw, RBI (0-0); Quinn scored, interference. Al. Andrews grounded out to p (1-2 BFF). Griggs grounded out to 2b (1-1 BK). 1 run, 2 hits, 0 errors, 1 LOB.
