Don't they typically serve dinner at the very start of these events? I believe that's how ours was, and I know every birthday ball I've ever been to was like that.

Back when I was in school we didn't have a dinner. (I DO remember we didn't plan for that....basically all we planned for was decorations, band, etc.)
Maybe the planned it that way for the Muslims? I don't know, honestly.
Since you remember more about your prom....when did your prom end, and when did it start?
