I don't think it's a matter of race. I think it's more likely because Russia doesn't embrace the progressive social changes that they (the media) champion. So, to the media it's ok to make Russia the boogeyman.

Many non-white countries don't embrace the progressive social changes. Media doesn't say much about them.
