As far as Washington and Oregon, I do know that the Seattle metro is a much stronger economic engine than Portland. Seattle has Amazon, Microsoft, Boeing, Starbucks, Costco and two top ten container ports. Not that familiar with Portland, so if I'm off base someone correct me.

Business Insider ranks Oregon as the number 13 "best" economy in the US and Washington #1.

I lived out there, so I understand that. What I don't get is the difference in federal moneys as a percentage of budget. They're very similar politically, demographically, culturally, median income, etc, etc.

Oregon doesn't quite the economic powerhouses, but they don't have as many people, either.
