No, it was not. The film did not screen for critics until the week before release. Reaction was most decidedly mixed.

In the weeks and months prior to release, most of the tweets describing the quality of the film was second hand information.

It resembles the BvS experience in that any positive pre-reviews will be dismissed as studio-influenced-hype.

The truth is, the embargoed tweets have become pretty meaningless, especially after the studios have clamped down on critics dissing movies while embargoed. The lonely negative tweeter who didn't like Guardians of the Galaxy II had to apologize for "saying too much" so that he'd get back into the good graces of Disney.

But honestly, if it was a "borderline mess", we'd have heard the warnings that we'd heard about Suicide Squad and BvS.
