It was a left handed outfielder and he was moving full speed towards the foul line to try and catch the ball in the air. There was no way he could have worked his body around and made an accurate throw home with enough velocity to beat the runner home. The hit was not as shallow as DoubleB is claiming. It wasn't warning track deep for sure, but it was deep enough and hit on enough of a line drive angle that the outfielder could not get any momentum on a potential throw home.
