They don't call picks before they are on the clock. Loomis said this is the first time they ever did and it was because they had questions (Payton later said he told him they'd call if he was their pick; it definitely wasn't calling him to tell him they were picking him before they were on the clock; they never did before and Payton is super paranoid about stuff like that to begin with).

Seeing that the questions were for his girlfriend I'm guessing they were trying to ask trap questions to see if he had lied about something (otherwise why are you asking her questions?).

And they could have talked to her pre draft if they really needed to ask her questions, so it definitely seems like this was a situation to catch them off guard.

If that was the case, im surprised they were even interested. If you're calling for more answers or to see if a girlfriend's story matches up, it's hard to believe you would take that person. Especially in the first round.

So they did it. First time, last time is moot. The idea that they don't do it is untrue because they did.

And vetting a player by calling his girlfriend or him - while their selection is slotted next is ridiculous.

It's at best a whitewash. As I said, the truth probably lies inbetween. But Saints were still vetting. No way they even call anyone unless he's their wanted pick.
