I saw a pretty fascinating documentary about him a while back on PBS of all places. It's really hard to judge the character of a person who lived 150 yrs ago by the social standards of today. As far as him being a failure as a leader, I'll give you that. Davis micro managed the war, but the biggest strike against him was how poorly he worked with others. He was so consumed with the cause that he constantly butted heads with those that he felt were not as deeply committed to it as he was. There was no compromise with him which made him an ineffective leader
