I agree with the rest of your post though
So change the placard. That doesn't change the monument to the 30+ dead on both sides that died fighting. If anything that monument had the biggest connection to New Orleans as it memorialized an actual event where citizens died.
If I was a family member of one of the people that died I would absolutely be livid about it. What person has the right to tear down a monument to the dead?
There were metroplitan police that were memorialized there that now have to come down because some politician wants his approval rating to go up among certain demographics.
ETA:that's aside from the fact that the monument was being torn down to essentially ensure even fewer people know about what happened in September of 1874.
