The Medicine Bow range is just west of Laramie. It's not as rugged as some of the other places but it doesn't have the crowds and has lots of wildlife (moose at high elevation, antelope on the way up). I really liked it and intend to get back some day and camp it for several days. Very nice trail up Medicine Bow Peak. And Laramie has the best Thai restaurant I've ever eaten at.

Nice suggestion. There are so many spectacular places that AREN'T national parks.
I'm not a fan of Yellowstone just based on crowds alone.
