TB touched on this but yeah you can choose to leave the current year alone or "rewrite" it with a lower salary and some of the bonus money.

It all depends on length. If it's a 4 year extension they'll almost assuredly put some bonus into this year (max length to stretch a signing bonus is 5 years). If it's a 5 year (or longer) extension they may leave this year be.

But it could go a few other ways too.

All depends on what the player and team want.
