When something like this comes up, it's often instructive to find a local source rather than a national news organization, especially an Op Ed.

A couple of things stand out.
That seems odd.
That puts a bit of a different spin on things. I think a lot of this transgender stuff is silly at best, and lunacy at worst, but the reality of this particular situation is not quite as represented in the story linked by OP.

A couple of things stand out.
quote:
Boyertown Area schools Superintendent Richard Faidley said in a statement posted online Wednesday that the school only learned of the lawsuit after the plaintiff's representative had informed the media.
That seems odd.

He said further that the district "is firmly committed through our words and actions to treating every student, and member of our community with respect, dignity, and sensitivity in accordance with all applicable laws. The administration and staff, contrary to the allegations, offered the student-plaintiff reasonable and appropriate alternatives when he voiced opposition to changing in a designated male locker room being used by a transgender student. We also discussed those options with his guardians, explaining that at the time we were following the law of the land. Even though the Federal government’s position has changed since then, we are now guided by a recent Federal court ruling in a Pennsylvania case, and await additional guidance from the State of Pennsylvania."
