The belief was that the white guy was the black guy's server, and he didn't take kindly to his obvious homosexuality. So, when the server went into the restroom, the black guy went in and assaulted him, then hauled arse out of the exit without paying.

Maybe he faked a hate crime and hoped everyone would forget that he didn't pay?
