Cheap Hotels Around Phoenix?

I'm headed to Phoenix with my wife and son the last week of March. Apparently it is their most expensive time of year, and I'm finding that most hotels around Tempe are running $200+/night before taxes and fees. I found a Red Roof Inn in Tempe for $134/night, but that's still more than I want to pay especially when it's a cheap, discount hotel.

Any suggested areas to look? I don't mind driving that much. We're planning on day tripping to the Grand Canyon anyway but will mostly be in the immediate Phoenix area.

It's Spring Training. Doesn't matter where you stay...prices are jacked up. Remember...there are spring training stadiums all over the PHX metro area(Scottsdale, Tempe, Surprise, Peoria, Mesa, etc). So that is why hotels everywhere are up.

It is certainly doable....but will be a really long day. Grand Canyon is a 4 hour drive from PHX. Could always spend the night in Flagstaff instead of driving back to PHX that night. Hotel rates might be much cheaper that way as well. Plus....Flagstaff is a really cool little town to check out.

Actually sitting in Phoenix right now myself... Spent the week here for work then my wife met me on Friday so we could spend a few days here and in Sedona. Everything is jacked up right now... Currently staying in a Hampton by the Airport for $199/night... Unreal.

Try bed and breakfast in Sedona. Probably more $ but beautiful. Maybe midway between Phoenix and Flagstaff. Did this last August. Great trip

Sounds wonderful. But I need less money.

I'm probably going to use my credit card points to offset the costs. Looks like I can get three nights for $200 total.

I don't know your specific days but Final Four is April 1 & 3. Most people fly in Thursday or Friday. This is going to jack rates up even more than usual.

If you can plan your Phoenix days the earlier part of the last week in March and hit Grand Canyon at the end of your trip you'd probably save some dough. (I also recommend staying in either Sedona or Flagstaff the night before or night of your Canyon visit)

Speaking of Final Four....

You going? My husband put himself into the ticket lottery last Final Four. Paid $400. He was chosen. Got 2 tickets for all 3 games.
