re: Your mind will wrap itself in knots if you ponder the term 'African American'

quote:No, false, ignorant story. In the 1980's and 1990's, the population of people with recent Caribbean and African ancestry increased significantly, highlighting that we didn't have a word for those Americans with roots that dried up in the African diaspora. That's why the term African-American exists.
The term came about because white progressives a few decades back thought that the label of "black" was negative. Black is associated with darkness and evil in all societies. That needed to be fixed so they relabeled them as African Americans. True story.
"Those people are Nigerians. Those people are Haitians. Those people...hmm...what we call those people in Harlem that doesn't start with n?"
That's where the term comes from. Amazing how willfully ignorant so many around here are. The term has a specific meaning for a specific purpose, and it doesn't mean the same thing as "black."

Nice spin. Rated 9 out of 10. All of that is just cover for reality. Progressives, being the word parsers that they are, wanted to dissociate the Negro race from the word "black." Black has dark and evil connotations the world over. As such, they unknowingly implied that people of the Negro race should somehow feel ashamed to be referred to as black. Because the progressive mind knows what is best for everyone and what individuals or groups should accept as a label. Blacks were fine with being black until they were told they shouldn't be by their progressive white consiglieres. The irony is that now many blacks are starting to view being called African American as offensive as being called colored. They are not accepting anymore that they should be ashamed of being referred to as black and are throwing off the chains of another progressive democrat attempt to tell them how to think.
But that was a cool story. All blacks got lumped into the label given to some Haitian and Caribbeans who came in the 80s and 90s. You rock Ballboy!
