You didn't live in those times, did you? To be a self-identified Communist then was to also be open to be either an active or passive agent of Soviet Communism. And anti-American.

Thought policing is throughly anti-American. And anti-American activities of the government are way worse than those Anti-American activities, that weren't related to actual espionage.

I find it terrifying that people think it's justifiable to target citizens because of their ideological believes, whether they are terrible or not.
