quote:
And yes I know how the cap works. I've been looking at 2017-18 for over a month now.
Well let's see what you've said so far:
quote:
he dead money would be cut in half if they cut him next season.
Well that is false. It goes from $8m to $4.6m. The thing is, that money is already paid out. So it is really irrelevant to anyone wanting to have an actual logical discussion on this
quote:
They save 3.2 million cutting him now and take 8 million in dead money (Pre June)
You take on $8 million in dead money whether it is pre-June 1st or not. The difference is that if we designate him as a post June 1st cut, we can spread out the cap hit.
Either way, we're not using the space designated in 2017 by a post-June 1st cut in FA unless we do a delayed signing like last year.
What we can use in FA is the $3.2 million in space
quote:
They have 7 million in cap relief next season cutting him and cut the dead money in half.
Yea, that isn't how this actually works.
Guess what. We save the money in 2017 by cutting him this year too....
Even if it isn't a pre-June 1st cut (which would make zero sense with cap rollover from year to year, unless we need the space to sign players THIS year), we save:
2017: $3.2m
2018: ~ $7.9m
So we create ~$11.1m in cap savings over the next 2 years instead of the $7.1m we save in your scenario.
So here's the question: Is he worth the $3.2m (or more if you do a delayed signing)?

In all honesty I dont realy like this move.
The 3.2 Mil that we save this FA by cutting him in my opinion will not be enough to pay for what production he brings to the field. He actualy was alot better than most people gave him credit for. He may not have lived up to his price, but he was clearly a difference maker on the field at times, expecially by aiding the young guys to learn the system.
Worst case scenario he was a starting caliber safety.
Dont think that a 3.2 Mil rotational player will make up for cutting Byrd.
Next season was definatly his tome to go tho.
