Currently doing it now on Ancestry. The old censuses are kind of a bitch because there can be multiple spellings of the same name, no record of being remarried, etc. Even some of the names listed as official names can change.

My wife worked on ours. I recall she found some site online with photos of cemetery headstones that she used to validate birth and death dates. I don't have that site but if yuo are into it I bet it can be found; just an FYI...

My membership to ancestry also gives me full access to Newspapers.com, which you can search for obits, weddings, etc.
I think Ancestry is the best and easiest sight, although you have to be very careful to not approve false links. I won't link anything to mine until I have lots of evidence.
