What are the issues with just buying a new one on Amazon vs going through Google for the replacement?

Do you have Nexus Protect? If so, that would be a much cheaper option ($79) than buying a new phone.

No, I didn't have that on this phone. And I'm sort of glad that I didn't, because it's unclear what sort of inventory remains of the 5X. Google said that they did not have any in their warehouse, which meant they would have to interface directly with LG...and they mentioned that there was no guarantee that LG had any inventory (and also it would take at least 2 weeks.) This is the 3rd phone I've purchased from the Play Store, and I do think it's a significant weakness of Google. Their support for these devices is awful (I've yet to speak to a representative who knew the answer to even the most basic question). It's almost as if the phone doesn't even exist anymore from their perspective. And it took me over 30 minutes on the phone with them to find all this crap out. I just bought one on Amazon.
