So let's say we have a 3 or 4 loss conference champion one year because that division sucks and the winner of the other division lays an egg in the championship game.

Well, considering there are 5 conferences and only 4 spots, you're assuming that happens to two conference champs. I think that's unlikely.

This definitely happens more often than B1G teams getting shut out in the playoffs.
