We've worked well with them when we were the clear hegemonic power and they were simply trying to get their shite in order. However, they've entered a new phase of trying to project power and become a hegemon in their own right, so we will be more directly opposed to them than we have been in the past.

Isn't the same true of Russia, who has geopolitical ambitions to restore its sphere of influence in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and has actually acted on those interests in recent years?
Chinese interests are more internal, as they have had uneven development in the country, and have restless populations in their western portion. They have terroritorial claims in the South China Sea, along with Vietnam, the Phillipines, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia and Taiwan. The most they have projected power outside of that area is a burgeoning relationship with Pakistan (see the book The China-Pakistan Axis) in an attempt to prevent the problems in Central Asia from spilling over into Xinjiang. This is also an attempt to cut India off from Russia (one of India's closest allies) as well as to replace the US as one of Pakistan's allies.
For me the threat between Russia and China is even, and we should do all we can to play them against one another, as they are historically opposed.

China WILL be the eastern hemisphere's hegemonic power within a generation baring a war with United States. We simply cannot "win" a peace with them.
