"They live in a bubble" would be a more cynical way of putting it. Points of view inevitably will differ greatly here. Think about it. I'm in New York, and it's a bag of skittles, and whatever color the Muslims are doesn't really cause any problems in New York. Joe Blow is in middle America, and all he knows about Muslims is what he sees on tv. Joe Blow and I are bound to see Muslims differently; most of your national media are produced by people who live within 20 miles of me.

I spent plenty of time in NYC and knew some great Muslims. If they wanted to carry out or supported the jihad, they did a damn good job of fooling me. Granted I'm sure the extremists didn't try as hard to integrate into society and I never interacted with them.
All that said, we don't need to be taking in a ton of refugees without a rigorous vetting process. I don't think we owe US rights and liberties to non citizens/residents. Yeah, it's nice to help when we can, but we can help in other ways.
