Ok. So now we need to pay them more. Public employment typically pays less, but it defers some compensation until retirement. If public employees are to be treated like everyone else, they need to be paid more, like everyone else. So now, big boy, pay more taxes to give the public employees a raise to the average salaries of their private sector counterparts.
Or is this just a proposal to screw them over?

I doubt that.
Does anyone believe that overall private school teachers are paid more than public? In the New Orleans charter schools perhaps but not in the rest of the private schools.

Public employees are free to go the private sector at any time.

The rest of the taxpayers are being screwed---not the state employees.
I suspect not 1% of the Louisiana population working in the private sector has defined benefit plans as lucrative relative to salary as a state employee.
