Smith attended Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal for a time before transferring to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge for the 2002 school year.

At LSU, she ran the mile during the indoor season, and cross country, the 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters and the 3,000-meter steeplechase during the outdoor season. Her top time in the mile was 5:33.34 at the LSU Twilight track meet. Her time of 11:57.98 in the steeplechase at the LSU Alumni Gold Track & Field Invitational ranks second all-time at LSU. She was clocked 5:10.90 in 1,500 meters and 11:12.93 in the 3,000 meters at the SEC Quadrangular Indoor Meet.[2] Smith is the second FBN anchor to have played Division I college sports on an NCAA national championship team (LSU 2003).
