Whatever I rather take my chances with a 12 gauge at night trying to hit a barely visible target.
Assuming you are shooting across a normal sized room (say 15-20 ft) the spread might be a couple of inches at that distance, so you're not gaining much there. Any gained accuracy is due to the ability to shoulder a shotgun, but there are downsides to a shotgun as well, particularly in hallways and tight quarters.
A shotgun does have much better stopping power, but that doesn't have anything to do with "9/10 people not being able to hit anything in the dark."

OP already stated he went outside so everything you have typed after this is irrelevant.

What I said was 9 times out of 10 you wouldn't have much success hitting a perp in the dark outside. He might have to let off ten shots and to hit him once. Do you not understand tactics? Whereas a shotgun blast would be effective for a good 40 yards. The OP stated he lives on 3 acres.
