Itd be the dick move of the century, but all the new engines log idle time in the ECM and you can have the shop pull that data for you when you have a failure to see how much time your guys are spending sitting in the truck. The reality of new diesels is that you simply cannot idle them for weeks just for the air conditioner like you could with an old mechanical engine.

Now how to convince a pipeline welder to turn his truck off and sit outside so you don't have to pay for turbo and EGR cooler replacements is far outside of my skill set.

We have tracking software in them that tells us all of that information as well as the mileage for maintaining our IFTA logs. I handle the DOT paperwork as the HSE manager (don't ask me how that got put into my job description), but I am not the fleet manager for the vehicles so basically that is their call on watching the engine idle times and vehicle maintenance. I inform them of the trends that I see, but it is up to them to figure out what their course of action will be. I do not agree with it and have voiced my opinions and concerns and most of the time it just falls on deaf ears, one of the downfalls for working for a family company with family in all upper management positions.
