Johnny Hector- 1979 graduate of New Iberia- The best athlete La's ever produced period! Avg over 10 yds a carry in his high school career! As a freshman in HS finished 3rd in 4A long jump and ran a leg on 4x100 relay..NISH won State that year and he won long jump the next 3 years ...still hold 4A long jump record! His brother got out of prison(Manslaughter charge) when he committed to LSU in early commitment period in September of 78...He took all his visits..OU, Texas, and A&M...signed with A&M in Feb'79 ..."boy did Dr Curtis Roy DDS in Lafayette get butt hurt over this.. he even threatened Johnny saying he could have his brother sent back to prison" ...Johnny started as a Freshman when Curtis Dickey got hurt and started all games after that..finished Runner-Up to Carl Lewis in Southwest Conference track&field Championships all 4 years in the Long Jump.. best jump was Olympic Trial qualifying jump of 26'2"..drafted by the Jets in 2nd round of '83 draft played 10 years with Jets featured mainly as a short yardage back had 41 TD in his career..He was involved in 1600 touches.. running, receiving and kick returns with 1 fumble...that's a hell of a record!!! Johnny achieved greatness while suffering from sickle cell trait which caused him to be fatigued during games and limited his playing time through out high school, college and the pros! He's a great golfer for 56 yrs old ...hits it a long way and straight too....He's a hell of a nice guy too... Why he is not in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame? I guess Dr Roy is threatening any sport writer who nominates him...It's a dam shame too cuz he's earned the right to be there!!!!
