Nice buttonweed patch, 
. I'm not gonna mess with the buttonweed in my lawn at this point. Just gonna nuke it in the spring with some Speedzone.
Pepperidge, I've never heard of a chemical being used so much that it makes its way into the water table, except for MSMA in Florida. The golf courses abundant there were using it mto excess, which is why MSMA is still highly regulated in that state.

You probably had/have army worms that came in and ate the lawn to the point of killing it.
Biferthrin in liquid or granule form for army worms
Now you have button weed and dove weed.
Metsulfuron (msm turf, manor, mansion) or Celsius for button weed. It looks like you have some bahia grass in there which will be killed by both of the products.
Atrazine for dove weed.
