Maybe Gehrig or Clemente but they were mid and end career respectively. This is like if Lebron had died in a car wreck after the Pistons game. Just so, so much potential that no one will ever see-- at home he was the best pitcher in baseball by a pretty wide margin, hell 5 days ago he went 8, struck out 12 and gave up 0 runs against Washington.

Even though he was older and not nearly as good as Jose, the first thing I thought of when I heard the news today was Darryl Kile. He was the first prominent big leaguer who I can remember passing away during his career. I vaguely remember Derrick Thomas's death but Kile's hit me hard because I really only cared about baseball when I was younger and he was a former Astro.
