It's more like a college schedule where you don't have each class each day. Usually it's 45 minute courses with six classes per day, something like 8am to 12.30pm/1pm. There is no busy work during lecture.
Also in the beginning of most classes, one student will be called upon to go to the front of the class and answer questions about the last lecture. This is for a grade so people need to review and be prepared each class on most days.
Religion can be opted out of, students can attend an Ethics class instead.
