I coach HS soccer. My fellow coaches and I have decided to move to a 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield from a 4-4-2 flat. We also decided to use a numbering system for positions instead of names. While researching I discovered 2 different numbering systems for the 4-4-2 Diamond.
7 9
10
11 8
4
3 6 5 2
1

and

9 11
10
7 8
6
2 3 4 5
1

Which is correct?

My guess is that the first one - where the CDM is a 4 - plays more like a 3-4-1-2 when in possession, with the fullbacks pushed up high and the CDM dropping back to nearly CB depth. There are a lot of teams that do that right now.

Otherwise, I can't imagine why the 4 would be in the midfield.

RB is usually 2. LB is usually 3.

Anerican 4-3-3

3 5 4 2

4-4-2

Drop the 11, push the 8 wide right

The numbering system changes in different countries. In Dutch you can have two 6s for instance. I want to say in England the 4/5 are switched but I'm not as sure as I haven't done any UEFA licensing.
