I think it is a hard 9 hours from Hammond. I guess it depends on your route. If through Memphis, that a nice stop. If through Shreveport, you could visit Hot Springs.
Hot Springs
From there you could drive through the Ouchita National Forest. From the other side of the forest, the drive to Fayetteville is beautiful. From there, it's not far to Eureka Springs.

Personally, I would suggest a state park cabin near Hot Springs and then tour the town. I would finish the drive the next day. We stayed at Lake Catherine state park. We stayed in Cabin 15 or 16.
