I noticed that when I was in Iowa, so I used to make it a point to tell people hello in stores just to see the confusion.

Well I wasn't as outgoing when I grew up in Michigan, but after moving to Louisiana and had culture shock, I moved back to Michigan in the mid 90's and it was only natural to say hi to anyone I made eye contact with and done would stop me and ask if we knew each other with a mean look on their face.
