It stays pretty true to the book as far as I remember. I read the book a loong time ago.
Here are some differences that I noticed:
The movie doesn't start with the dog fight...it starts focusing on Billy's childhood.
In the movie, Billy and the dogs don't win the coon hunting competition...another person wins it, but gives the cup and money to Billy.
The book, of course, is better...but it was easier to get 10 year olds to buy in on watching a movie.
I looked it up...here is a page that shows some other differences between the book and the movie.
