NASCAR drivers are amazing professionals who steer 3,300 lb, 725 hp vehicles around a slippery track.
As you note, the real issue is when civilians think their econo-boxes can do the same thing.

My own theory is that while the Indy 500 or Daytona 500 is on TV, its the worst.
