Just did one...
Front....-982.00
Back.....330.00 (200.00 from reserve, 130.00 from GAP, sold the warranty at cost)
Hold back...460.01
Compensation to sales person...150.00
No incentive from Manufacturer
Total deal...-342.00
Not including PDI costs to the shop, gassing up the vehicle, and paying detail.
Yeah...we eating good tonight!
That deal aside, it can get rough out there. Luckily, I work for a company that allows me to sleep in peace at night. If we are averaging 400.00 on the front, and 1100.00 on the back...its a good day! I do know of other dealers who straight out rob people, luckily, I can look at myself in the mirror and I am fine with what I see.

Even if you built the value of that car and made a $4,000 front it's completely ethical.
These guys are dying to pay a transparent full retail price where the manufacturer is making the margin instead of the hometown dealer. They want machines or online sales to replace the 30,000 sales reps currently working.
They want their taxes to help pay those 30,000 sales guys the welfare Who are out of jobs.
They really don't like you slimy sales guys spending 2hrs after your shift ends to show them how all the controls works and to re detail the car a 2nd time because they noticed a smudge.
They don't want to haggle they just want to give that markup to overseas companies instead American people and American owners

You forgot pack. (if they tell you that they dont have a pack, they are full of shite)
No unit bonuses for hitting your number at the end of the month? No bonus from the finance company? No etch, etc? No doc fees? (you know that you got that 100 :)
And why did this deal end up with those numbers? Bad credit? Bank cut you back? Bank wouldn't give you money in the back?
It has been said several times that some deals don't make a lot of money. I have even seen a legitimate loser when a dealership was trying to hit their new car number. However, it is a unicorn, and nobody in the building intended the deal to finalize with little or no profit.
