This series got me interested in fiction again after about a decade of only reading nonfiction.
Its so confusing but the "ah ha!" moments will forever stick with me. Its almost like reading an ancient text were you have to constanatly try to decode things.

Gene Wolfe. I always frick that name up. Neil Gaiman had a blurb on Wolfe's book and it got me to read it. Said it was the best sf novel of the last century.
