A misinterpretation from revelation scripture that evangelicals believe in
As far as the "mark", everyone needs to understand that accepting the "mark" guarantees that person an eternal spot in hell. No one will be "forced" to accept it, but there will be consequences for not accepting it.

Why would it happen?
Also I can't imagine how not taking the mark would somehow be worse than eternity in hell.
That said I also don't understand why in this war between good and evil the Devil takes all the evil doers and punishes them for God. It doesn't make much sense, wouldn't Lucifer want to help the people who worship him, and the ones God rejects?
Beyond me.

Grew up in church. There is some disagreement about what the mark will be. Classically, most people think mark in head or hand or something. I don't think it'll be something like that. Marks like currency.
I think it'll be something subtle such as currency, accepting and prescribing to the laws and order of the "beast".
It's all speculation but I don't think putting chips in people is the route this is going. I also don't think it'll be framed as "choosing". It'll just be the way things are and it will take discernment to understand the difference.
There's also a theory that this will not be world wide but will be limited in scope to say the Middle East and surrounding nations. Think Old Roman Empire, as that is the known scope of this Anti Christs power.
