It isn't just the salary (though that bump can be considerable). You generally get a spot in the company compound (meaning you live rent free) and many offer cafeterias and other services which help cut down on expenses.

Plus living like a monk for your term over there means relatively little other expenses since you almost never leave the compound.

And no poon for the time, and the threat of dying. If you want something that risky, why not join the army and at least be in a squad of well armed friends.
